Where does baklava come from? – The sweet history of a classic
Baklava – a word that evokes sweet memories and tastes of festive cheer. This unique dessert has a centuries-long history. Its origins can be traced back to the Ottoman Empire, where baklava was served in palaces on special occasions. Handcrafted and filled with exquisite ingredients such as pistachios and walnuts, baklava has become a symbol of indulgence, refinement, and celebration.
Today, this tradition lives on in its finest form – in our bakeries at Back-Lava. And we'll show you how!
How is traditional baklava made?
Making baklava requires skill, patience, and the finest ingredients. Below, we'll show you how to prepare our most popular versions—just as our master bakers prepare them fresh every day:
🥇 Classic Pistachio Baklava (Fıstıklı Baklava)
Ingredients:
- 500 g flour
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 250 ml water
- 100 g starch (for rolling out)
- 300 g finely chopped Antep pistachios
- 250 g butter (clarified)
- 400 g sugar
- 250 ml water (for the syrup)
- 1 dash of lemon juice
Preparation:
- Knead flour, egg, salt and water into a soft dough and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 40 small pieces and roll each ball out very thinly using starch.
- Place the first 20 layers in a buttered baking pan, brushing each layer with butter.
- Spread the pistachios evenly on top, then add another 20 layers of dough.
- Cut into diamonds and pour hot butter over them.
- Bake at 180°C until golden brown.
- Cook syrup from sugar, water and lemon juice, let it cool and pour over the hot baklava.
- Allow to cool completely before serving.
🌰 Walnut Baklava (Cevizli Baklava)
Same dough preparation as for pistachio baklava, but with chopped walnuts as the filling – perfect for lovers of savory nut flavors.
🥥 Coconut Baklava (Hindistan Cevizli Baklava)
Finely grated coconut is used instead of pistachios . The flavor is exotic and slightly caramelized—ideal for anyone looking for a sweet change.
🍃 Fıstık Sarma (pistachio rolls)
Here, the dough is not layered, but rolled out into thin strips, filled with the finest Antep Fıstığı , and rolled up. These delicate rolls are covered with butter, baked, and finished with syrup – a green, delicately sweet delicacy.
